60 Mater Academy Students Earn College Degree Just Before Their High School Graduation

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, fifty students from Mater Academy Charter High and ten from Mater Lakes Academy Charter High graduated from Miami Dade College. This means that the student will enter universities across the country this fall as juniors. Many of the students, like Alejandra Corona (pictured here), are children of immigrants and a majority of whom are the first in their families to attend and graduate from college.

“Our students balanced a rigorous high school curriculum with tough college courses, after-school activities, sports, service and interest clubs, honor societies, and family commitments to achieve a college degree. We are incredibly proud of them,” explains Judi Marty, Principal, Mater Academy. Ms. Marty estimates that 300 students at Mater Academy took dual enrollment courses this year. The students were able to accomplish this thanks to the strong dual enrollment program at their school.

“Our faculty provides guidance to students throughout their middle and high schools years to get them college ready, and in many instances the outcome is a two-year college degree,” explains Reve Rovirosa, the Principal of Mater Lakes Academy. This level of intervention and guidance helps drive graduation rates, which exceed 95 percent at Mater Academy high schools -- a figure above the U.S., average, as well as the national average for minority students.

Ranked among the best high schools in America by U.S.News & World Report and a winner of the College Board’s Breakthrough Schools Award, Mater Academy is located at 7901 NW 103 Street in Hialeah Gardens. Opened in August 2006, Mater Lakes Academy 17300 NW 87th Avenue, is in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Both are part of the Mater Academy family of high-quality, tuition-free public charter schools located throughout Miami-Dade County. Mater Academy’s strong academic track record has been recognized by the Florida Department of Education and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In 2009, Mater Academy Middle was named Breakthrough School by the National Association of Secondary School Principals – one of just ten schools recognized nationwide for dramatically improving student achievement. Both Mater Academy and Mater Lakes Academy rank among the nation’s top high schools according to The Washington Post, and U.S. News & World Report.
