Those that operate charter schools know that districts have a lot of power over charter schools. For instance, the application process allows a district to review a charter sch application and make a decision based on a number of aspects. They also have the power to check in on a charter school any time, and review financials on a monthly basis. However, districts like to tell media that they're helpless and are just now taking action. While the spin from the districts continue, we know that they allowed many of the recently closed charter schools to open even though they did not have a C.O., and were operating in buildings not zoned for a school. Here's what Palm Beach and Broward District reps told the Sun Sentinel.

While some school districts continue to claim that they have little control over the quality of charter schools that open, and have diminished power over charter schools once they're operating, the TRUTH is that districts -- as charter school authorizers, the ones who award a contract to operate, and disperse funds - do have a great deal of power as well as responsibility. We want to see quality charter school applicants approved and need school districts to vigilant and thorough in their evaluation process.
