FLORIDA – May 21, 2012 - Newsweek Magazine released their list of the top 1,000 high schools in the country today – ranking schools by graduation rate and college readiness. Several high performing public charter schools in South Florida made the list: Doral Academy (City of Doral), International Studies Charter High School (Miami), Mater Academy (Hialeah Gardens), City of Pembroke Pines Charter High, and Somerset Academy (Pemproke Pines).
According to Newsweek, more than 2,300 schools were assessed nationwide and ranked according to self-reported statistics from the 2010-2011 school year. Graduation rate, percentage of 2011 graduates accepted to college, average AP/IB/AICE exam scores were among the parameters used to measure the performance and produce an overall score for each school. The ranking failed to account for the percentage of free/reduced lunch program students attending each school. That data would have pushed the charter schools further up in the overall ranking.
In early May 2012, Doral Academy Charter High School and International Studies Charter High also made the U.S. News & World Report list of top-ranking high schools in America.
