State Releases Best and Brightest Scholarship Information

The Florida Legislature extended the Best and Brightest Teacher Scholarship program into the 2016/17 school year, and added $5 million in funding to it. The program rewards qualified teachers with bonuses of $10,000 for their SAT and ACT scores.

The Florida Department of Education released a memo (DPS 2016-84) and several attachments to the memo to school district superintendents about the program and made it clear that the Department will not interfere with a district’s decision on who gets the money.

The Legislature, says K-12 Chancellor Hershel Lyons, gave the Department no rule making authority over the program “so the Department has no authority to supervise or review the eligibility determinations made by district school boards. Each district school board should review the statute and make its own decision regarding eligibility questions.”

The money should go to eligible teachers no later than April 1.
