Two Florida Charter Schools Honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2016

Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) congratulates both winning schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two Florida charter schools were formally recognized this week as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2016 at an awards ceremony hosted by the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.

Somerset Arts Conservatory School in Pembroke Pines and State College of Florida Collegiate School of Bradenton were among 329 public and private schools recognized for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps. Both schools are members of the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS).

"The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools congratulates both winning schools,” said Robert Haag, President of FCPCS. “We are proud of their accomplishments and of their membership in FCPCS.”

Each winning school receives a flag that identifies that school as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2016. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the flags “affirm the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.”

Somerset Arts Conservatory School is one 16 high performing charter schools operating under the Somerset banner and located in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. All are affiliated with Somerset Academy, founded in 1997 in Miramar, Fla.

State College of Florida Collegiate School is a tuition-free public charter school in Manatee County, Fla. It is the nation’s first college-operated charter middle school where students have the opportunity to study on a college campus.
