Two Florida Educators Named Charter School Champion Teacher of the Year

FLORIDA – On November 15, 2012 the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) – the state’s leading charter school advocacy and support organization – hosted a bash to celebrate the charter school movement’s most valuable contributors. Held during the annual state charter school conference, the Florida Charter School Champions Awards recognized exceptional individuals who represent the very best aspects of the charter school movement through their work in and on behalf of charter schools. Award categories included charter school Principal, teachers, governing board member, vendor, community leader, pioneer and state legislator.

“Public charter schools continue to accomplish great things for children because of the great work people like Eric Fernandez and Lori Meadows do every single day” said FCPCS President, Robert Haag. “They all do an incredible job raising academic standards and student achievement, and supporting quality choice education programs in our state but receive little, if any, recognition. We created the Florida Charter School Champion Awards to recognize and thank them for their incredible contribution to education and the charter school movement.”

Charter Schools Champion Pioneer Awards
Fred Damianos, Regional Vice President of Imagine Schools, helps develop and nurture charter schools and promotes the charter school movement at the local, state and national levels. While at Miami Shores Barry University Charter School, one of Miami-Dade County’s first charter schools, Fred established the first charter school on campus and was an essential contributor to the creation of the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools.

Katrina Wilson-Davis was the Principal of the first charter school in the state of Florida and has played an integral part in developing the growth of quality charter schools in the state since 1997. She continues to mentor charter schools and is a tireless advocate for charter school students, teachers and parents.

Fernando Zulueta is the President of Academica, a charter school support organization. Under his guidance, several public charter schools, including Mater Academy, Somerset Academy and Pinecrest Academy have become high quality, high performing educational programs earning state and national recognitions. # # #
